Why Wastewater Treatment Is Important

It is often forgotten that water is a finite resource; we forget this because water is so easily accessible to us. We drink litres of it every day, we shower in it, we use it to wash our clothes, cars, to water our plants – the list is seemingly endless. However, a few key facts about water as a resource, listed below, show just how scarce it is, therefore, highlighting the importance of preserving it – which can be done through treating wastewater.

Facts about water:

  • Roughly 97.4% of Earth’s water is seawater and seawater cannot be used as a resource for humans without first going through the process of desalination. The problem with this is that the desalination of water requires a lot of energy. Salt, a solute, dissolves very easily in water, forming strong chemical bonds, and those bonds are difficult to break. The energy and the technology needed to desalinate water are both expensive, and this means that desalinating water can be pretty costly.
  • Out of the remaining 2.5% of water available on Earth, 1.7% of that is in the form of polar icecaps and glaciers; for obvious reasons, using this water as a resource is incredibly difficult.

Think about some of the examples listed above in relation to how often we use water. Now, given that only 1.3% of the Earth’s water is readily available for use in our day-to-day lives, taking steps to ensure that this access to water remains as we have always known it, is important. One step in the right direction is treating generated wastewater to a standard that makes it safe, pure and reusable. By doing this, water used is not simply wasted and lost.
