How Your Cleaning Products Are Killing Your Septic System

Picture this: you’ve just given the bathroom a good scrub, the laundry is done, the benchtops are gleaming, and the kitchen sink smells fresh. Your home is spotless. You’re proud of it.

Meanwhile, a metre underground, the living bacterial ecosystem that keeps your wastewater system functioning is taking a hammering — and you had no idea.

This is the reality for thousands of Australian homeowners on septic systems. The very products marketed to keep your home clean are, quietly and consistently, doing serious damage to the system you depend on most. The problem isn’t always obvious at first. It builds slowly over months and years, until one day the warning signs appear — a soggy patch in the yard, a drain that gurgles, a smell you can’t quite locate — and by then, the repair bill can be significant.

The good news is that once you understand what’s happening below the surface, the fix is mostly straightforward. It starts with knowing which products to rethink and which alternatives actually work.

Section 1: How Your Septic System Actually Works

Before we get into the products, it helps to understand what’s happening in your tank — in plain English, not engineering speak.

Your septic system (whether it’s a conventional septic tank or an aerated wastewater treatment system, commonly called an AWTS) works by using naturally occurring bacteria to break down the waste that leaves your home through the drains. These microscopic organisms digest solid waste, neutralise harmful pathogens, and help produce effluent that can safely disperse into the surrounding soil.

Think of it as a living, self-sustaining ecosystem — one that runs entirely on biology rather than machinery. In an AWTS, this process is assisted by pumped oxygen that encourages aerobic bacteria to work more efficiently, producing a higher quality of treated effluent. But in both types of systems, the bacteria are the engine.

Here is the critical point: that bacterial population is sensitive. It needs a reasonably stable environment to thrive — the right temperature, the right pH, the right food source (your household waste), and crucially, the absence of chemicals that kill it.

When harsh chemicals enter your system through the drains — from cleaning your bathroom, doing a load of washing, or pouring something down the kitchen sink — they do not simply disappear. They travel through your pipes and into your tank, where they can begin to kill off the very bacteria keeping the whole system alive.

Section 2: The Products Quietly Killing Your System

This is where most homeowners are surprised, because we’re not talking about unusual or industrial chemicals. We’re talking about ordinary products you’ll find in nearly every Australian household — probably in your cupboard right now.

Bleach-Based Cleaners

Bleach (sodium hypochlorite) is one of the most widely used household disinfectants in Australia, and it’s an ingredient in many popular products, not just the straight-up Domestos or Clorox bottles. It is extremely effective at killing bacteria and viruses on surfaces — which is exactly the problem when it enters your septic system.

Even relatively small, regular amounts of bleach-based cleaners going down your drains can gradually reduce the bacterial population in your tank. We’ve already explored bleach and septic systems in detail in a dedicated post on our blog — the short version is: wherever possible, swap bleach-based products for the alternatives listed in Section 4.

Antibacterial Soaps and Handwash

This one catches a lot of people off guard. You reach for the antibacterial handwash because you want to keep your family healthy — completely reasonable. But those antibacterial agents (often triclosan or benzalkonium chloride) don’t stop working when they go down the drain. They reach your tank and continue killing bacteria, including the beneficial ones your system needs.

Products labelled “antibacterial”, “antiseptic”, or “kills 99.9% of bacteria” are a red flag on a septic system. That includes antibacterial kitchen handwash, antibacterial dish liquid, and many hand sanitiser formulations that get rinsed off into the drain.

Chemical Drain Cleaners

Products like Drano and similar chemical drain openers are among the most damaging things you can introduce to a septic system. They are formulated to dissolve organic matter — which sounds useful for a blocked drain, but is catastrophic for a septic tank, where breaking down organic matter is the entire job of your bacteria.

These products typically use highly caustic chemicals (sodium hydroxide is common) that will strip your tank of its bacterial population very rapidly. If you have a slow drain, reach out to a professional wastewater technician rather than pouring a chemical fix down the sink. A blockage in a septic system usually has a biological or structural cause that a drain cleaner will not actually fix — and may make significantly worse.

Toilet Bowl Cleaners — Toilet Duck, Domestos and Similar

Many toilet bowl cleaners contain both bleach and strong acids or other disinfectants, making them doubly problematic. The toilet flushes directly into your septic system, so whatever you use to clean it has a direct path to your tank with very little dilution.

In-cistern tablets that slowly dissolve with every flush are a particular concern, because they deliver a low-level but continuous chemical dose to your system every single day. That steady drip of disinfectant is more than enough to suppress your tank’s bacterial population over time.

Napisan and Nappy Soakers

Napisan is a familiar name in Australian laundry rooms, and it’s worth discussing because there is genuine debate about it. The modern Napisan formulation is primarily based on sodium percarbonate, which breaks down into oxygen and water — and on the face of it, that sounds safe.

The issue is that some formulations also contain additional brightening or cleaning agents, and some older or alternative products in this category use chlorine-based compounds rather than percarbonate. The safest approach is to read the label carefully: if the product lists sodium percarbonate as the active ingredient and does not contain chlorine bleach or antibacterial agents, it is generally considered lower-risk. If it contains chlorine or antimicrobial actives, treat it with the same caution as a bleach product.

When in doubt, check with your septic service provider before regularly using any laundry soaker.

Dishwasher Tablets with Phosphates

Phosphates were once common in many dishwasher and laundry products and have been progressively phased out in Australia due to their environmental impact — they accelerate algae growth and can damage waterways and drain fields. Most modern dishwasher tablets have reduced or eliminated phosphates, but it’s still worth checking the label, particularly on budget brands or bulk products.

Beyond phosphates, many dishwasher tablets also contain bleaching agents (often listed as “oxygen bleach” or “percarbonate”) and surfactants that are effective for dishwashing but can affect your system’s bacterial balance if used heavily. Running your dishwasher once a day with a standard tablet is generally manageable for most systems, but if you’re running multiple cycles daily or using heavy-duty formulations, it adds up.

Fabric Softener

Fabric softener is often overlooked in septic system discussions, but it can cause a specific and frustrating problem. Most conventional fabric softeners are petroleum-based and do not biodegrade easily. In a septic tank, they can accumulate in the scum layer, contribute to the coating of soil particles in the drain field, and over time, reduce the drain field’s ability to absorb and filter effluent.

The impact is gradual — you are unlikely to notice anything for months or even years — but fabric softener residue is a real and common contributor to drain field degradation.

Exit Mould and Mould Sprays

Exit Mould, and similar mould-removal products, typically contain sodium hypochlorite (bleach) in significant concentrations — often higher than general-purpose cleaning sprays — plus additional surfactants. Bathroom surfaces are a common application point, and all of that product goes straight down the shower drain and into your system.

If you’re dealing with a persistent mould problem in the bathroom, there are effective alternatives (see Section 4), but repeated use of a concentrated bleach-based mould spray on a septic system is worth taking seriously.

Antibacterial Dishwashing Liquid

Most standard dishwashing liquids are reasonably safe for septic systems when used in normal amounts — they dilute significantly and most are biodegradable. The exception is dishwashing liquid labelled “antibacterial”. The same concern applies as with antibacterial handwash: those antimicrobial agents travel through your plumbing and into your tank, where they do what they’re designed to do — kill bacteria.

Stick to standard, non-antibacterial dishwashing liquid if you’re on a septic system. Better still, choose a plant-based formula.


Section 3: The Laundry Room Problem

Even if every product you use is perfectly safe for your septic system, your laundry habits can still cause problems — and this is one of the most common issues we see.

A standard household washing machine uses anywhere from 60 to 150 litres of water per cycle, depending on the machine and setting. If you do multiple loads back-to-back on a Saturday morning, you can push several hundred litres of water through your system in a matter of hours.

Your septic tank needs time to do its job. Wastewater needs to sit in the tank long enough for solids to settle and bacteria to begin breaking them down before the liquid (effluent) moves on to the drain field. When you flood the system with large volumes of water in a short period, you push partially treated effluent through the tank before the biological process has done its work. This reduces the quality of treatment, and over time it can overload the drain field.

The practical fix is simple: spread your washing through the week. One or two loads per day is much gentler on your system than five loads on a single day.

A few other laundry habits worth looking at:

  • Use the correct amount of detergent. More detergent does not mean cleaner clothes — it means excess chemicals in your system and residue on your clothes. Follow the recommended dose on the label.

  • Choose liquid over powder where possible. Powder detergents can sometimes clump and not fully dissolve, which can contribute to build-up in your pipes.

  • Cold water washes are generally fine and save energy. The temperature of your wash water does not significantly affect your septic system.

  • Check your detergent’s biodegradability. Most reputable brands in Australia now use biodegradable surfactants, but it’s worth checking — look for “readily biodegradable” on the label.


Section 4: What IS Safe to Use

Here is the practical side of things — what actually works as a replacement, and where to find it.

Natural Cleaning Alternatives

Several everyday pantry staples are genuinely effective cleaners and pose no risk to your septic system:

White vinegar is acidic enough to cut through limescale, soap scum, and mineral deposits. It works well on shower screens, bathroom tiles, taps, and benchtops. Diluted with water (roughly one part vinegar to two parts water), it makes a reliable all-purpose spray. It also acts as a natural fabric softener — add half a cup to the rinse cycle in your washing machine instead of commercial softener.

Bicarbonate of soda (bicarb) is a gentle abrasive and natural deodoriser. Combined with vinegar it creates a fizzing reaction that’s useful for cleaning drains and removing baking residue from oven trays. Use it as a mild scrub on sinks and tubs.

Lemon juice contains citric acid, which is effective against mould and mildew, and leaves a clean, fresh scent. Useful for descaling kettles, treating mould in the bathroom, and freshening up the kitchen.

Hydrogen peroxide (3% solution, widely available at pharmacies) is a safer alternative to bleach for disinfection and mould treatment. It breaks down into water and oxygen, leaving no harmful residue.

Vinegar, bicarb soda and lemon juice are powerful, septic-safe cleaning alternatives that won’t harm your system.

Septic-Safe Commercial Brands

If you’d prefer to stick with commercial products, there are genuinely good options available in Australia. Look for products labelled “septic safe” and, where possible, “biodegradable” and “phosphate-free”. Brands worth looking at include:

  • Aware Environmental — Australian brand offering laundry liquid, dishwashing liquid, and surface cleaners formulated to be safe for septic and greywater systems.

  • Abode — Australian-made, plant-based cleaning range covering laundry, dishwashing, and surface cleaners. Widely stocked at health food stores and some supermarkets.

  • Zero Co — An Australian refillable cleaning brand with a range that includes laundry liquid, dishwasher tablets, handwash, and bathroom cleaners. Formulated to be biodegradable and free from harsh chemicals.

  • Sukin — Better known as a personal care brand, but their soap and handwash range is plant-based and free from the antibacterial agents that cause problems in septic systems.

When you’re reading labels, the key things to avoid are: sodium hypochlorite (bleach), triclosan, benzalkonium chloride, quaternary ammonium compounds (“quats”), and phosphates. If a product contains any of these, find an alternative.


Section 5: How to Know If Your Cleaning Habits Have Already Done Damage

The tricky thing about gradual bacterial depletion is that the effects can take months or years to become visible. By the time you notice a problem, the damage has been building for a long time. Here are the signs to watch for:

Odours From Drains or the Yard

A properly functioning septic system should not produce strong odours that make their way into your home or above the ground in your yard. If you’re noticing a sewage smell inside — particularly near drains or in the bathroom — or catching whiffs outside near where your tank or drain field is located, it’s a signal that something is off with your system’s biology or structure.

Slow Drains Throughout the House

An occasional slow drain can be a simple blockage — hair, food particles, or soap residue. But if multiple drains across the house are slow at the same time, or if the problem keeps returning, the cause is more likely to be in your septic system than in an individual pipe. Slow drains can indicate that the tank is backing up due to poor bacterial activity, an overfull tank, or drain field failure.

Soggy Patches or Unusually Lush Grass in the Yard

This is one of the clearest physical signs that something is wrong with your drain field. If effluent is not being absorbed properly — because the drain field soil is saturated, compacted, or has been damaged by biomat (a layer of anaerobic bacteria and organic material that forms when the system is overloaded) — it will pool near the surface. You might notice wet or boggy patches, or an area of grass that is noticeably greener and growing faster than the surrounding lawn.

Gurgling Sounds in Your Plumbing

If you hear gurgling from your toilet or drains when other fixtures are in use, this can indicate that the system is backing up or that there is pressure building in the pipes due to reduced flow capacity in the tank or drain field.

Toilet That Is Slow to Flush or Backs Up

This is a later-stage warning sign. At this point, the system needs professional attention promptly.


Section 6: How to Recover and Protect Your System Going Forward

If you’ve recognised some of the warning signs above, or if you know your cleaning habits haven’t been septic-friendly, here is how to start turning things around.

Switch Your Products Immediately

The most important step is to stop introducing harmful chemicals into your system. Transition your cleaning products to the safer alternatives listed in Section 4. This doesn’t need to happen all at once — as products run out, replace them with septic-friendly versions. Within a few months, you’ll have made the full switch without a dramatic upheaval to your routine.

Give Your Bacteria Time to Recover

Bacterial populations in a septic system are resilient — once you stop introducing chemicals that kill them, they will begin to recover on their own. In a moderately affected system, the bacterial population can begin rebounding within a few weeks. If the damage is more significant, recovery takes longer.

Some homeowners choose to introduce a commercial bacterial additive or enzyme treatment to help accelerate this process. These products can be useful, but they are not a substitute for stopping the source of the problem. They are most effective once you have already removed the chemical stressors.

Get a Professional Inspection

If you have been experiencing any of the warning signs described in Section 5, or if you have not had your system inspected or serviced recently, this is the time to book a service. A qualified technician can assess the health of your system, check the bacterial activity, inspect the tank for solids accumulation, and evaluate the drain field. This gives you a clear picture of where things stand and what, if anything, needs to be done.

For AWTS systems in NSW, regular servicing by an accredited provider is not just recommended — in most councils, it is a condition of your system’s approval. Annual or quarterly servicing (depending on your system and council requirements) ensures that any developing issues are caught early, before they become expensive problems.

Spread Your Water Use

As discussed in Section 3, spreading laundry and other high-water-use activities through the week reduces the daily hydraulic load on your system. This is a simple habit change that makes a real difference, particularly for systems that have been under stress.

Know Your System

It is worth knowing the basics of your own system — what type it is (conventional septic or AWTS), roughly where the tank and drain field are located, when it was last serviced, and what your council’s servicing requirements are. This information helps you catch problems early and ensures you’re meeting any compliance obligations that apply to your property.

The Bottom Line

There’s no need to overhaul your entire approach to keeping your home clean. Most of the changes that protect your septic system are small — reading a label before you buy, swapping one product for another, spreading your washing through the week rather than doing it all on Sunday.

But those small changes matter.
