How Winter Changes Your Water Use and Your Septic System

Winter in Australia has a particular rhythm. The mornings are cold, so the shower runs a little longer. The blankets need washing, the kids are home from school, and everyone’s spending more time indoors. The house is busier, the laundry basket fills faster, and the kettle barely has time to cool down.

None of this feels like a big deal. It’s just winter — the same thing happens every year.

But for your septic system or aerated wastewater treatment system (AWTS), the cumulative effect of these small seasonal shifts can be surprisingly significant. And the connection between winter habits and septic stress is one that most Australian homeowners never make — at least not until something goes wrong.

Most Australians are aware that they use more hot water in winter. What they’re less aware of is just how much that translates into extra volume entering their septic system.

Showers get longer. On a cold morning, a 5-minute shower can easily stretch to 7 or 8 minutes without anyone really noticing. A standard showerhead uses about 8–9 litres per minute, meaning a 2-minute extension adds roughly 16–18 extra litres to your system — per shower. Across a household of four, with one longer-than-usual shower each, that’s an additional 60–70 litres per day. Do that across a week and you’ve added close to 500 litres above your usual baseline.

The laundry load increases. Winter clothing is bulkier. Doona covers, blankets, winter jumpers, footy gear, school sport uniforms — all of it needs washing more frequently and in larger loads. A standard top-loader washing machine uses between 120 and 150 litres per cycle. Even a front-loader, which is significantly more efficient, uses around 60–80 litres. One or two extra loads per week adds 120–300 litres, depending on your machine.

The whole household spends more time at home. School holidays fall in winter. People work from home more when the weather turns. Partners or housemates who might usually be out for the day are indoors, using water — flushing toilets, washing hands, making cups of tea. Even low-level activity adds up when it’s multiplied by every person in the house across every day of the week.

Indoor entertaining increases. Winter weekend gatherings are common — footy season, cosy dinner parties, family visits. These are all moments where the daily water load spikes above normal, sometimes significantly.

Individually, none of these changes are dramatic. Together, they can push a household well beyond its typical daily water use — and that has direct consequences for what’s happening underground.

Section 2: What Hydraulic Overload Means for Your System

Every septic system and AWTS is designed with a daily wastewater volume in mind. That design is based on the number of occupants in the house and assumes a standard, average daily use pattern. In NSW, this is typically calculated at around 180 litres per person per day, though it varies by system and council requirements.

When your daily water use stays within that design range, the system has enough time to do its job properly. Wastewater enters the tank, solids settle, and bacterial activity breaks down organic matter. In an AWTS, that process is further supported by aeration and disinfection before treated effluent is discharged. The key factor in all of this is retention time — the amount of time wastewater spends in the system being treated before it moves on.

When you consistently exceed your system’s designed daily volume, retention time drops. Wastewater moves through the tank faster than the biology can handle it. Solids that should settle get carried through. Effluent that hasn’t been fully treated reaches the drain field or irrigation system. Over time, this can cause the drain field to become waterlogged, clog the soil, or produce effluent that doesn’t meet the standards required by your approval conditions.

This is what’s known as hydraulic overload — and it’s one of the most common causes of septic system failure in Australian households.

AWTS systems are particularly sensitive to hydraulic peaks. Because they rely on a carefully balanced bacterial ecosystem to break down waste, sudden large volumes of water can dilute that ecosystem and reduce treatment efficiency. The system may still appear to be functioning normally from the outside, while the quality of treated effluent has quietly declined.

The frustrating thing about hydraulic overload is that it often develops gradually. There’s no single event that causes it — just a slow accumulation of slightly-too-much, day after day, season after season.


Section 3: The Laundry Problem in Winter

Laundry and septic systems have a complicated relationship at the best of times. In winter, that relationship becomes more challenging.

The volume issue is straightforward: more loads mean more water. But winter adds a few extra wrinkles beyond just load count.

Heavier items. Doona covers, thick blankets, ski jackets, and heavy woollen jumpers absorb far more water per wash than summer clothing. They also need longer wash cycles to clean properly, which means the machine runs longer and discharges more.

Hot water washes. Cold and cool wash settings are great for energy efficiency, but winter tends to prompt more hot washes — particularly for bedding, children’s clothing, and sportswear. Hot washes use more energy, but they also mean hotter water discharging into your system. More on that in the next section.

Front-loaders vs. top-loaders. This is one of the most impactful choices a household can make. A standard top-loading washing machine uses 120–150 litres per cycle. A front-loader uses 60–80 litres for the same load — sometimes less. If you’re still running a top-loader, it’s worth knowing that switching to a front-loader, or using its most water-efficient settings, could cut your laundry’s water footprint nearly in half.

Spacing your loads matters. One of the most practical things you can do for your system in winter is to spread your laundry across the week rather than doing multiple loads back-to-back on one day. When two or three large loads run in succession, you’re discharging several hundred litres in a matter of hours. That concentrated burst gives the system very little time to manage the load. Spacing loads by at least four to six hours allows the system to process each discharge before the next one arrives.

If you can, try to avoid laundry on days when you already know the household water use will be higher — when guests are over, for example, or on a morning when everyone’s had an unusually long shower.


Section 4: Hot Water and Your AWTS

Here’s something most Australian homeowners don’t know: very hot water entering your AWTS in large quantities can affect the bacterial ecosystem inside the tank.

The bacteria that treat your wastewater are living organisms. They operate best within a specific temperature range — typically between 20°C and 35°C. When water significantly hotter than this enters the system in large volumes, it can stress or temporarily suppress bacterial activity.

This doesn’t mean you need to take cold showers. The risk isn’t from normal shower temperatures or the occasional long bath. The risk is from a combination of very high temperatures and large volumes arriving in a short period.

Practically, the scenarios to be mindful of are:

  • Multiple long, hot showers taken in quick succession. If four people in the house each have a long, very hot shower within the space of an hour or two on a cold winter morning, a significant volume of very warm water enters the system in a short window.

  • Emptying a full bath. A standard bathtub holds 150–200 litres. If the bath is drawn very hot and emptied in one go, that’s a substantial thermal and hydraulic event for your system.

  • Hot water system bypasses or overflows. In some older properties, hot water systems may discharge overflow or relief valve water directly into the drainage system. If that’s happening at your property, it’s worth having it checked.

The practical response is simple: be conscious of how much very hot water enters the system in a concentrated burst, particularly during winter when hot water use is already elevated. If everyone in the house wants a hot shower on a cold morning, staggering them by even 20–30 minutes gives the system time to manage the load and temperature.

Section 5: Guests and the Holiday Effect

Winter brings more people into Australian homes. School holidays in June and July, weekend footy gatherings, family visits, houseguests who stay a few days — all of these temporarily increase the number of people using your system.

A four-person household with a system designed for four people is operating at capacity under normal conditions. Add two or three houseguests for a weekend and you’ve temporarily exceeded that design capacity by 50–75%.

For a brief visit, a well-maintained system in good condition can usually absorb this without lasting harm. But if the system is already under seasonal stress from increased winter water use, or if it’s overdue for a service, the extra load from visitors can tip it into problems.

A few practical steps before and during winter gatherings:

Before guests arrive:

  • Check when your last pump-out or service was due. If you’re approaching the service interval, arrange it before the gathering rather than after.

  • Make sure your system’s alarm is functioning — if it triggers during a busy weekend, you want to know straight away.

  • If you’re hosting a large gathering (six or more people for several days), let your service provider know in advance.

During a visit:

  • Let guests know not to flush wipes, tissues, or any other non-toilet-paper items. This is a polite but important ask — many people don’t realise how much damage these products cause to on-site systems.

  • If possible, hold off on large laundry loads during the visit and catch up in the days after guests leave, when system load drops back to normal.

  • Stagger showers where you can — it takes a little coordination, but it makes a meaningful difference to the volume and temperature profile hitting your system at any one time.

These aren’t big asks. Most guests, when they understand the context, are genuinely happy to be considerate. A brief, matter-of-fact explanation — “we’re on septic, so we just ask that wipes go in the bin, not the loo” — is usually all it takes.


Section 6: Simple Winter Habits That Protect Your System

Protecting your septic system in winter doesn’t require major changes. It requires small, consistent habits that reduce the hydraulic and thermal load on your system during the months when it’s working hardest.

Here’s a practical list to carry through the season:

Keep showers to 5–7 minutes. A short shower is still a hot shower. A timer in the bathroom (or a timer on your phone) can help form the habit without anyone feeling deprived.

Spread laundry through the week. Aim for no more than one or two loads per day, spaced several hours apart. Avoid stacking multiple large loads on the same day — especially on days when guest load or shower use is already higher than normal.

Use front-loader settings where possible. If your machine has an eco or water-saving mode, winter is the season to use it consistently. The water savings are real and cumulative.

Delay non-essential laundry during school holidays. If you know the house is going to be full, plan ahead. Clear the backlog before guests arrive and delay heavy loads until the household returns to normal occupancy.

Know when your service is due. All AWTS systems in NSW require regular servicing — usually every three to six months depending on your approval conditions. Winter is a good time to confirm your service schedule is current, not because winter itself requires extra servicing, but because a well-maintained system handles seasonal load far better than one that’s overdue.

Make sure everyone in the house knows where it is and what to do if it triggers. The right response is to reduce water use immediately and contact your service provider — not to wait and see if it clears on its own.

Remind guests of the basics. Wipes and non-flushable items in the bin, not the toilet. It’s a simple ask, and it prevents one of the most common causes of system blockages.
