Picture this: it’s been raining for a week. Not a gentle drizzle — proper, persistent winter rain. The kind that turns your lawn spongy and keeps the dog inside. You head out to check on a few things around the property and notice something odd near the back paddock. There’s a soggy patch over your drain field. A faint smell in the air. The ground is sitting wet in a way it wasn’t a month ago, and the whole area looks different — greener, almost lush.
Your system was working perfectly before the rain. Nothing changed. So what happened?
This is one of the most common calls we receive at Eco Septic during winter. And the answer, almost every time, is the same: the rain happened. Heavy, sustained rainfall is the number one seasonal threat to on-site wastewater systems across Australia. It doesn’t matter whether you have a traditional septic tank, an advanced treatment system, or a brand-new AWTS installation — when the ground is saturated and the rain keeps coming, every septic system in NSW faces the same fundamental challenge.
The good news is that understanding why this happens puts you in a much stronger position to protect your system, respond quickly when things go wrong, and know when to call for professional help.
Section 1: How Rain Actually Affects Your Septic System
To understand the problem, it helps to know how a septic system is supposed to work in dry conditions.
Wastewater from your home flows into the septic tank, where solids settle and bacteria begin breaking down organic matter. The partially treated liquid — called effluent — flows out of the tank and into the drain field (also called a leach field or absorption trench). There, it percolates slowly through the soil, where further natural filtration occurs before it re-enters the groundwater.
The critical word there is percolates. The entire drain field relies on the surrounding soil having enough capacity to absorb and filter liquid at the rate your household produces it. Under normal conditions, this balance works well.
Winter rain throws that balance out completely.
Soil saturation and hydraulic overload
When rain falls heavily over several days, the soil surrounding your drain field becomes saturated — meaning it’s already holding as much water as it physically can. There is no more space for absorption. Effluent arriving from the tank has nowhere to go, so it pools in the absorption trenches and eventually surfaces.
This is called hydraulic overload. It’s not necessarily a sign that your system is broken. It’s a sign that the soil is overwhelmed. The system is working — the soil simply cannot cope with the combined volume of effluent from your household and groundwater from the rain.
Overwhelmed vs. structurally failing
This is an important distinction. A system that’s struggling because the soil is temporarily saturated during a wet spell is very different from a system that has physically failed — cracked pipes, collapsed trenches, a tank that’s never been pumped out, or a drain field that’s become so clogged with biomat over the years that it couldn’t drain properly even in dry conditions.
A temporarily overwhelmed system will typically recover within a few days once the rain stops and the soil begins to dry out. A structurally failing system will continue to show signs of trouble even when the weather improves.
We’ll come back to how to tell the difference. But first, there’s another way rain gets into your system that many homeowners don’t know about.
Section 2: Stormwater Ingress — Rain Getting Into the Tank Itself
Soil saturation affects the drain field. But rain can also enter your septic tank directly — and this is where things get more complicated.
Most septic tanks and treatment systems have access lids at or near ground level. Over time, those lids can crack, seals can deteriorate, and the surrounds can settle unevenly. Inlet pipes can also develop cracks or gaps where they enter the tank wall. When heavy rain falls and surface water runs across your yard, it follows the lowest path — and if that path leads toward your tank, water can seep in.
Surface runoff is a particular concern on properties with sloped land or poorly graded yards where water naturally flows toward the tank area.
What stormwater ingress does to the tank
When large volumes of clean rainwater enter the tank, two things happen. First, it massively dilutes the liquid inside the tank. That might sound harmless, but the bacterial ecosystem inside your tank — which is responsible for breaking down waste — is sensitive to sudden changes in volume and dilution. Flood the tank with cold rainwater and you disrupt that microbial activity.
Second, the sudden influx of water raises the liquid level in the tank. This pushes effluent through the outlet pipe into the drain field much faster than normal — and at a much earlier stage of treatment. Partially treated effluent entering an already-saturated drain field is a significant health and environmental concern.
On properties where the septic tank or AWTS is in a low-lying area, stormwater ingress can also cause tanks to become physically waterlogged, which puts pressure on the structure itself.
Surface runoff directed toward your septic tank can enter through cracked lids and damaged inlet pipes — diluting bacterial activity and overloading the system.
Section 3: Signs Your System Is Struggling After Rain
Knowing what to look for is half the battle. These are the signs that your system is under pressure after a wet spell.
Soggy or waterlogged ground over the drain field
This is the most obvious sign. If the ground above your absorption trenches is unusually wet, spongy, or holding puddles — particularly when the rest of the yard is drying out — the drain field is saturated and effluent is not being absorbed properly.
Odours near the tank or drain field
A healthy, functioning system should be largely odourless. If you notice a sulphur or sewage smell around the tank area, the drain field, or near any inspection points, that’s a clear sign something is wrong. Odours during and after heavy rain are not something to ignore or wait out.
Slow drains inside the house
If your sinks, toilets, or showers are draining more slowly than usual during a rain event, the system is backing up. Effluent from the tank has nowhere to go, and the pressure is working its way back up the system toward your home.
The alarm is triggering
If your AWTS or advanced treatment system has an alarm — and it should — and it’s going off during or after rain, pay attention. The alarm is telling you the system has detected an abnormal condition. Don’t silence it and assume it’ll resolve on its own. Note the behaviour and contact your service provider.
Effluent visibly surfacing
If you can see liquid pooling over the drain field — particularly if it has any odour or unusual colour — that’s effluent surfacing. This is a public health issue and requires prompt action.
Is it temporary, or is something actually broken?
Here’s a general guide. If the signs appear during or immediately after heavy rain, and start to resolve within a few days of dry weather returning, you’re most likely dealing with a temporary wet-weather overload. If the signs persist a week or more after the rain has stopped, if the alarm won’t reset, or if you’re seeing effluent surfacing even in dry conditions, that points to a structural issue — and you need a professional assessment.
Section 4: What to Do Right Now If Your System Is Overwhelmed
If you suspect your system is struggling during a heavy rain event, the most important thing you can do is reduce the load on it immediately. Every litre of water you send down the drain right now is adding to a system that’s already at capacity.
Reduce your water use straight away
This means: space out toilet flushes, take very short showers, avoid baths, fix any dripping taps, and run the dishwasher only when absolutely necessary. If you have guests staying, now is the time to have the conversation.
Stop doing laundry
A single load of washing can push 100 litres or more into your system. During a wet-weather event, laundry is one of the quickest ways to tip a struggling system over the edge. Hold off until things improve.
Do not attempt to dig up the drain field yourself
We understand the instinct. You want to see what’s happening. But digging into saturated drain field trenches can collapse the trench walls, destroy the gravel bed that makes absorption possible, and cause damage that turns a manageable wet-weather event into a costly repair.
Do not use chemical drain products
This is particularly important during a wet-weather event. Chemical drain cleaners and “septic activators” sold in supermarkets do not help an overloaded system. Some products can actively harm the bacterial ecosystem in your tank, making the situation worse once the rain clears. Leave the tank alone.
Call your service provider
If the alarm is on, effluent is surfacing, or slow drains are getting worse — call. Your septic service provider can assess the system remotely based on your description, advise whether an emergency visit is needed, and give you specific guidance for your system type.
Redirecting stormwater away from your septic tank and drain field with surface drainage improvements is one of the most effective winter protections you can make.
Section 5: How to Protect Your System Before the Rain Hits
The best time to prepare your septic system for winter is before the first heavy rain arrives. Here’s what makes a real difference.
Divert stormwater away from the tank and drain field
Take a walk around your property and pay attention to how surface water flows when it rains. Does it run toward the tank area? Are there low spots where water pools near the drain field? Redirecting this runoff — whether through re-grading, swales, or surface drains — is one of the most effective things you can do to protect your system.
Even small changes in how water flows across your yard can significantly reduce the volume entering the tank through cracked lids or accumulating over the drain field.
Maintain vegetation over the drain field
Grass and shallow-rooted plants over your drain field are your friends in wet weather. Their root systems help draw moisture out of the soil and improve its ability to absorb effluent. Bare or compacted soil over the drain field absorbs much less water than well-vegetated ground.
What you don’t want over a drain field: large trees or shrubs with aggressive root systems that can invade and damage the pipes, or any impermeable surface like concrete or asphalt that prevents evaporation entirely.
Check lid seals and inlet pipes annually
Before winter, inspect the access lids on your septic tank or treatment unit. Look for cracks, gaps around the edges, or lids that have shifted. Check that the seal is intact. This is also a good time to ask your service provider to inspect the inlet pipe connection during a routine service — any cracks or gaps there can allow significant stormwater ingress.
Make sure the system is not overdue for pump-out
A tank that’s already nearing full has virtually no buffer capacity when rain arrives. If your septic tank is due — or overdue — for a pump-out, arrange it before winter. A tank that’s been desludged has significantly more capacity to absorb the extra stress that wet weather brings.
Keep vehicles and heavy equipment off the drain field
This is one year-round, but it’s especially important in winter when the ground is soft. The weight of a vehicle — even a ride-on mower — can compact the soil over the drain field, crush the absorption trenches, and permanently reduce the area’s ability to process effluent. Mark the boundaries of your drain field clearly and keep all traffic off it.
Section 6: When to Call a Professional
Some situations can be managed by reducing household water use and waiting for conditions to improve. Others need expert attention. Here’s when to pick up the phone.
Effluent is surfacing and not improving
If liquid is pooling over the drain field and it’s been more than a day or two since the rain eased, that’s not normal wet-weather behaviour. Surfacing effluent is a public health risk and needs to be assessed by a professional.
The alarm won’t reset
If your AWTS alarm has triggered and won’t clear — even after conditions improve — there may be a fault with a pump, sensor, or float that needs hands-on attention. Don’t leave an alarm running and hope it resolves.
The system isn’t recovering after dry weather returns
If it’s been a week of dry weather and your drains are still slow, odours are still present, or the ground over the drain field is still waterlogged, the system has not recovered on its own. That’s a signal of something more serious — drain field failure, a blocked outlet, or a tank in need of immediate pump-out.
You can see visible damage to lids or pipes
If you notice cracked or dislodged tank lids, damaged inlet or outlet pipes, or any visible structural damage to the system, call immediately. Don’t wait to see if the problem gets worse.
