What’s the Difference Between Greywater and Blackwater?

Greywater is the wastewater generated by showers, baths, hand basins, and laundry. It may contain soap, detergent, skin cells, and some bacteria, but it doesn’t contain human faecal waste.
Blackwater is wastewater from toilets — it contains pathogens including E. coli and other harmful organisms that require proper treatment before the water can go anywhere near soil, plants, or the public.
Kitchen sink wastewater sits in a category of its own and is treated differently again — more on that in Section 4.
The reason this distinction matters for reuse is simple: greywater, because it lacks faecal contamination, can be managed and redirected more easily than blackwater, which always requires full treatment through a system like an AWTS before it can safely re-enter the environment.
Why More Australian Homeowners Are Looking at Greywater Reuse
Water scarcity is not a new problem in Australia, but it’s becoming harder to ignore. Prolonged droughts, stricter water restrictions in both rural and suburban areas, and steadily rising water bills have pushed more homeowners to think seriously about where their water goes — and how they can make better use of it.
The numbers are striking. Greywater from showers, baths, hand basins, and laundry can make up up to 50% of a household’s total wastewater output. For the average NSW household, that represents thousands of litres per year that could, with the right system, be returned to productive use in the garden, for toilet flushing, or for cold laundry cycles.
For homeowners on rural or semi-rural properties — particularly those on tank water or under water restrictions — this isn’t just an environmental tick box. It’s a genuinely practical water management strategy. A well-maintained garden on a dry block is expensive to water from a rainwater tank. If a properly managed greywater system can carry some of that load, the savings in tank drawdown can be significant over a dry summer.
There’s also a less-discussed benefit: redirecting greywater away from your septic system reduces the volume of water that your tank and drainage field need to manage. On smaller or older systems, this can meaningfully extend the system’s operational life.
What Is Actually Legal in NSW?
This is the section that matters most, and it’s where a lot of homeowners — with the best intentions — get themselves into trouble. Let’s be direct: you cannot simply plumb your greywater to a garden hose or irrigation line without a compliant system in place. Doing so is illegal, creates genuine health risks, and can contaminate your soil and groundwater.
With that said, there are legitimate options ranging from simple to sophisticated. Here’s what the rules actually say.
Option 1: Bucket Collection (No Approval Required)
The simplest approach — and the one that requires no approval whatsoever — is manual collection. You can collect greywater from your shower, bath, or laundry by hand (a bucket under the outlet is the classic method) and apply it directly to your garden.
The rules for this are straightforward:
The water must be used within 24 hours — it cannot be stored
It must be applied below the canopy of plants and not allowed to pool on the surface or run off onto a neighbouring property
It cannot overflow into stormwater drains or waterways
You should be using phosphorus-free or garden-safe detergents if the water is going near plants
This is legal, practical for small amounts, and free — but it’s obviously not a hands-off solution for the long term.
Option 2: Greywater Diversion Devices (GDD) — Often No Council Approval Required
A greywater diversion device (GDD) is a plumbed device that automatically redirects greywater from your bathroom and laundry to a subsurface irrigation system in your garden. These are installed by a licensed plumber and can be a genuinely useful, low-cost way to reuse greywater without going through a full approval process.
The key rule: in NSW, a WaterMark-certified GDD can be installed without council approval provided it meets specific requirements set out in NSW Health’s greywater guidelines:
The device must hold a WaterMark licence (previously called a Plumbing Safety Licence)
It must have a hand-activated bypass valve, switch, or tap — so the greywater can easily be diverted back to the septic or sewer if needed (during wet weather, for example, or when the garden doesn’t need irrigation)
The device must be self-draining — no storage of untreated greywater
Greywater can only be dispersed via subsurface irrigation (buried at least 100mm below the soil surface), keeping it away from direct human contact
The system must not include kitchen wastewater (more on this below)
Devices that don’t include the hand-activated bypass valve or don’t have WaterMark certification do NOT qualify for the exemption and would require council approval. Some products available at hardware stores fall into this category, so it’s worth checking before you buy.
A licensed plumber must carry out the installation. The plumbing work itself typically requires notification or sign-off under the relevant plumbing code, even where council approval for the system itself isn’t required.
What can a GDD handle? Bathroom greywater only — showers, baths, and hand basins. Laundry greywater is generally included. Kitchen sink water is excluded, full stop.
Option 3: Greywater Treatment Systems (GTS) — Approval Required
A greywater treatment system (GTS) goes further than a diversion device. It actively treats greywater to a higher standard, which opens up more reuse options — including surface irrigation, toilet flushing, and cold water laundry supply.
The trade-off is that a GTS requires both NSW Health accreditation and council approval to install and operate. These systems must also be maintained under an annual service contract with a qualified contractor — similar to the obligations that come with an AWTS.
NSW Health currently accredits four greywater treatment systems for use in NSW:

These systems are the right choice if you want maximum reuse capability — particularly for toilet flushing or above-ground irrigation — but they come with more complexity, higher upfront cost, and ongoing maintenance obligations.
A greywater treatment system (GTS) can treat water to a standard suitable for surface irrigation, toilet flushing, and laundry use — but requires NSW Health accreditation and council approval.
What About Kitchen Sink Water?
This is worth its own section because it’s one of the most common misunderstandings in the greywater space.
Kitchen sink wastewater — the water that comes from washing dishes, rinsing food, and cleaning the kitchen — cannot be included in a greywater diversion device and should not be treated as ordinary greywater.
The reason is straightforward: kitchen wastewater carries a much higher load of fats, oils, grease, and food particles than bathroom or laundry water. It also tends to carry significantly higher bacterial concentrations. In a diversion device system, this creates blockage risk in the irrigation lines and, more importantly, a genuine health and environmental contamination risk.
Under NSW Health guidelines, kitchen wastewater from a GDD system is specifically excluded. It must go to your septic tank or AWTS for proper treatment.
If you’re retrofitting a greywater system to an existing home, a licensed plumber will need to confirm that your kitchen sink drainage is — and remains — connected to the main septic line, not the greywater circuit.
Should You Separate Greywater From Your Septic or AWTS?
Honest answer: it depends on your situation. Here’s a balanced look at the pros and cons.
The Case For It
Real water savings. Redirecting 30–50% of your household wastewater to productive garden use is a meaningful reduction in water consumption, particularly through dry seasons.
Reduced load on your septic system. Less water going into your tank means less hydraulic load on your drainage field, which can extend its life and reduce pump-out frequency.
Garden benefits. Greywater from laundry and bathing contains traces of nutrients (phosphorus, nitrogen) that can actually benefit garden beds and lawn — provided you’re using appropriate, low-sodium detergents.
Environmental responsibility. For homeowners on rural properties with limited water supply, sensible greywater reuse is a genuine sustainability outcome.
The Case Against It (Or At Least, Reasons to Think Carefully)
Upfront cost. Even a basic GDD installation has a material cost. A full greywater treatment system is a significant investment.
Ongoing obligations. A GTS requires a maintenance contract, similar to an AWTS. This is non-negotiable under NSW Health requirements.
Product choices matter. If greywater is going to your garden, you need to be using garden-safe, low-sodium, phosphorus-conscious cleaning products in the bathroom and laundry. This is good practice anyway, but it does add a consideration.
Retrofitting complexity. In an existing home, separating greywater from the main wastewater line requires plumbing work. This is manageable but not trivial. In a new build or major renovation, it’s much easier to design in from the beginning.
Council approval for GTS. If you want to go beyond a basic diversion device, you’re looking at a formal approval process through your local council.
For most rural NSW homeowners with a garden to water and an existing septic or AWTS, a GDD is often the practical sweet spot — low cost, no council approval (if the device is WaterMark-certified and correctly installed), and a meaningful water saving over summer.

How Much Does a Greywater System Cost in Australia?
Costs vary significantly depending on the type of system, the complexity of your existing plumbing, and your location. Here are rough ballpark figures for planning purposes:

Plumbing retrofit costs depend heavily on how your existing plumbing is laid out. A single-storey home with accessible underfloor or wall plumbing will generally be cheaper to retrofit than a two-storey slab home.
Costs in regional NSW may differ from metro areas based on trade availability and travel costs.
These are approximate figures. Get quotes from licensed plumbers who are experienced with greywater systems — and make sure any GDD they recommend carries WaterMark certification.
How Does This Interact With Your Existing Septic or AWTS?
This is an important question that often gets overlooked in the enthusiasm to install a new system.
When you divert greywater away from your septic tank, you are reducing the hydraulic load on it — less total water volume is entering the tank and being processed through the drainage field. For an older or smaller system that’s been working hard, this is a genuine benefit. It reduces the risk of the drainage field becoming hydraulically overloaded, and it may reduce the frequency of pump-outs.
However, there is a flip side. When greywater is removed from the equation, the proportion of blackwater in your septic system increases. Blackwater is more concentrated — it contains more organic matter and requires a healthy bacterial ecosystem in the tank to break it down effectively. Most systems will handle this without issue, but it’s something to be aware of, particularly if your tank is already on the smaller side relative to your household.
For AWTS systems specifically, the situation warrants a conversation with your service provider before you make any changes. An AWTS is a carefully calibrated treatment system — it’s designed around a particular wastewater profile. If you significantly alter the volume or composition of what’s entering the system, it can affect the biological processes inside the unit. Your service provider can advise whether your specific system would benefit from or be affected by a greywater diversion.
The short answer: diverting greywater is generally beneficial for your septic system, but talk to the people who know your system before you start changing what goes into it.
